Ergotamine tartrate is the generic name for the prescription medication sold as Ergomar in the United States. It is used in the treatment of headaches that are throbbing and severe, such as cluster headaches and migraines, the Mayo Clinic reports. Ergotamine tartrate is used only for severe headaches and does not function to relieve pain symptoms of other types. It may be administered as a pill or suppository.

Circulation Problems

Ergotamine tartrate has the potential to cause some serious but quite common side effects that produce problems with blood circulation. Contact your physician immediately if you experience any of these problems. If your blood is not circulating properly because of ergotamine tartrate, you may feel very cold. You also may feel tingling or numbness, particularly in your face, toes and fingers. Rx List.com states that ergotamine tartrate may induce hypertension or high blood pressure. It also may cause your heart to race in a condition called tachycardia, or slow your heart rate, which is called bradycardia. This medication also may cause an improper circulation of blood called ischemia and it may produce cyanosis, which is a blue tint to your skin caused by a lack of oxygen circulating. Gangrene, or the death of bodily tissues, may occur because of this. RxList.com states these are common serious side effects with long-term use, but also may occur with regular doses.?

Gastrointestinal Side Effects

As with many medications, ergotamine tartrate can produce some problems in your abdominal area as you first start taking it. You may, for example, get queasy in your stomach and vomit during the initial phase of treatment. These types of side effects are classified as non-serious and typically are temporary, Drugs.com states.

Body Side Effects

Taking ergotamine tartrate also can cause common serious side effects that affect other portions of your body. You may, for example, feel a sensation called paresthesias, which means you feel tingling and numbness in your body. If you notice such effects, explain them to your doctor as soon as you can. It may require a change in medicine or other medical aid. You also may feel that you are very weak physically, and you may experience vertigo, a sensation of spinning. This dizziness, Drugs.com reports, should be temporary as you begin treatment with ergotamine tartrate.
