Bags under the eyes can appear as dark circles, mild swelling or loose skin and may be caused by aging, genetic factors, lack of sleep or allergies. Although they are rarely cause for concern, consult a physician if the swelling is extreme or if your eyes are red and itchy, as these may indicate other underlying medical conditions. There are many store-bought remedies available, but they can be costly. Home remedies are quick and easy, and most require ingredients or items already found in your home.

Cool Compresses

Dampen a clean wash cloth with water, wring out excess water and gently press under your closed eyes for a few minutes to help reduce puffiness. The cool water helps constrict blood vessels and may minimize the baggy appearance and dark circles. You can also freeze two spoons, lightly coated with Vaseline to avoid injury, and place the rounded part against your eyes for several seconds.

Kitchen Cures

Several home remedies for under eye bags can be found right in your kitchen. Place warm, moist plain tea bags wrapped in tissue against your eyes for five minutes. The tannins in the tea are a natural astringent and may help reduce puffiness and tighten loose skin, according to Dr. Marianne O'Donoghue of St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago. Raw cucumber or potato slices can also be placed on your eyelids for 10-15 minutes. Always wash the eye area after using kitchen remedies.

Sleep

It's not only important to get enough sleep to reduce or prevent under eye bags and dark circles, but how you sleep can also play a role. Laying flat can cause excess fluids to accumulate in the eyes, which can lead to swelling and puffiness. Use an extra pillow or place a wedge under the head of your mattress to prop up your head while sleeping.

Siberian Ginseng

In her book "Prescription for Herbal Healing," Phyllis Balch, a certified nutrition counselor, recommends taking Siberian ginseng tincture for puffiness caused by prolonged fatigue. However, this remedy should not be used by those with autoimmune disorders such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, or those with prostate cancer.

Diet

Maintaining a healthy diet rich in leafy greens and whole foods may help prevent under eye bags. Avoid salt, both table salt and that found in processed foods, as it can cause the body to retain water and increase puffiness. Drink the recommended eight to 10 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated, but avoid drinking too many fluids right before bedtime.
