4 Ways to Provide Care for the Elderly

1. Arrange for Regular Home Visits

For elderly people who are in good health and can care for themselves, scheduling regular home visits may be the best option. Companies that offer this service usually concentrate on a specific type of activity, such as providing meals, helping with the laundry or offering house cleaning and care. They may visit daily or only once or twice a week, depending on the level of care needed. Their clients are expected to care for themselves at all other times.

2. Consider In-Home Care

Full-time nursing care is an excellent option if you want to be part of the decisions regarding the healthcare of your elderly parents or relatives. With a healthcare aide coming to their home, you can decide how to participate, what the qualities of the helper should be and how to make changes in the daily routine of the elderly person you're caring for. This is a good option if you live nearby to check in frequently and if the home itself is safe and adapted for the life of the elderly resident.

3. Look Into Retirement Communities With Support Services

Retirement communities are a great solution for elderly people who need assistance and a 24-hour emergency presence but are not disabled enough to need to live in a nursing home. Most retirement communities have a list of requirements, including an age minimum (60 or over is common), a list of rights and obligations for anybody living there and an entry fee you must pay to move there. Most retirement communities also require a monthly fee to cover certain issues, such as private security, on-call nursing help, social activities and home care. Most retirement communities require you to buy an apartment or home inside the gated area in order to qualify to live there, but a few allow renting. Retirement communities are not for elderly people who have serious medical conditions, as the care and support provided are minimal and residents are expected to provide for themselves.

4. Discuss Nursing Homes

Nursing homes are the best option for elderly people who cannot care for themselves and have no family or loved ones nearby and easily available to help them at home. Medicare may cover part or all of the cost of nursing home care for certain patients, and because the homes themselves have nurses on staff all the time, it may actually help cut down on medical costs that would otherwise come out of the family's pocket.
