Building a dependable golf swing is the goal for any new golfer or high-handicap player. It's not necessarily about putting a low number down on the scorecard. It's about building consistency and feeling confident that you will hit the ball well every time you get ready to swing your club. One of the first steps is developing the correct takeaway for your swing, because that sets the path your swing will follow.
Step 1
Address the ball correctly before you begin your swing. Make sure your left shoulder (for a right-handed golfer) is facing the target. Your left foot should be directly under your left shoulder. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart and your knees should be slightly flexed in an athletic position.
Step 2
Shift your weight to your backside to start the takeaway process. In order to have a proper golf swing, you need to shift your weight from your backside to your front leg. That means the majority of your weight must be on the left side when you get started.
Step 3
Rotate your hips away from your target. As you rotate your hips, allow your shoulders and arms to follow.
Step 4
Cock your wrists as you bring the club back. Your forearms and your golf club should form a 90-degree angle.
Step 5
Make sure your hands get to shoulder height. At this point, you will have moved your weight to your rear leg. This will put your swing in the trigger position and you will now be ready to launch into the ball.
