Premenstrual syndrome can inflict days of discomfort and pain on women each month. The degree of pain experienced by each woman varies based on her physical condition and how she chooses to treat her PMS symptoms. One well-traveled route for dealing with PMS is by using herbal remedies to relieve discomfort. If you are looking to treat your PMS through herbal remedies, there are several different herbs you can try in an effort to bring peace to your body.

Step 1

Take 30 to 60 drops of viburnum, sometimes called cramp bark as a slang term. Put the drops into warm drinking water and consume the fluids. This can relieve cramps, muscle tension and spasms while improving digestion and anxiety.

Step 2

Drink two cups of tea brewed from the roots or leaves of dandelions daily. Dandelion root is high in vitamin A, potassium and iron, all of which can help reduce the severity of PMS symptoms such as bloating, swelling, spasms, acne and inflammation.

Step 3

Take a few ounces of black cohosh daily. Black cohosh is believed to attach itself to estrogen receptors in the uterus and is an anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic herb. However, black cohosh can have a negative effect on young children and should not be taken by mothers who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Step 4

Consume 2 to 3 grams of dong quai daily. This herb balances hormones in the body and has a similar effect on the menstrual cycle. It can lead to a significant reduction in pain resulting from PMS -- particularly cramping -- and can also be used to treat irregular or skipped periods.

Step 5

Use St. John's wort supplements to combat depression associated with PMS. Strong cases of PMS may be accompanied by depression that can last after the physical effects of PMS have subsided. One pill supplement of St. John's wort consumed daily can help ease the depression, reducing the overall effect of PMS on your body.
