Weight loss is a simple equation; a matter of calories in versus calories out. Unfortunately, many people want to lose weight and try to eat less but they often find themselves feeling so hungry that they need to eat. Hunger can cause you to stray from your diet plan or overeat. With the proper tools and techniques to curb hunger, losing weight will be a lot easier, regardless of what diet or eating plan you are on.

Drink Water

Drinking water is an excellent way to curb hunger. According to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), drinking water will help you to lose weight in several different ways. It explains that drinking water can increase the rate at which your body burns calories. Because water has no calories, you can lose weight by switching from juice or soda to water. Additionally, many people mistake an empty feeling in their stomach, which is actually thirst, for the sensation of hunger, so they eat. If you drink plenty of water so that you're not thirsty, you will be less likely to feel hungry when you don't need to eat.

Eat Water and Air-Filled Foods

Another good way to curb feelings of hunger is by eating foods that contain high water and/or air volumes. Foods with a lot of water, like watermelon or soup, fill up your stomach so that you do not feel hungry. Foods with a lot of air, like air-popped popcorn, can do the same thing. For example, Susan Hold, PhD from the University of Sydney tells the AARP that boiled potatoes, which have high water content, are filling so you are likely to take in fewer calories overall after eating them.

Eat More Fiber

Fiber is a dietary component of foods that come from plant products. "Good Housekeeping" magazine states that fiber comes from food with carbohydrates, like whole wheat bread, oats, fruits and vegetables. Foods with fiber add bulk to the stool weight; curbing hunger and making your bowel movements regular. The National Institutes of Health suggests that adults get 25 to 35g of dietary fiber every day to control hunger, prevent overeating and even reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Add Protein Foods to Your Diet

Foods rich in protein, like eggs and beef, can help you feel full for longer, according to the AARP. Because foods rich in protein take longer to digest in your stomach, "Good Housekeeping" magazine states that you won't feel hunger shortly after eating some protein from a food like cheese, turkey, tofu, turkey, beef or chicken.
