Gold Bond products focus on skin care solutions for itchy and dry skin problems. The company also produces normal and medicated lines for rashes and other skin irritations. Gold Bond has been powdering athlete's foot and medicating skin rashes since the 19th century.
History
The Chattem Drug and Chemical Company, founded on February 21, 1879 as the Chattanooga Medicine Company (CMC), manufactures gold Bond products. Gold Bond products officially started with the company's acquisition of the National Toilet Company whose line of athletic medication, ointments and medicated powder spawned the Gold Bond product line.
Powders
Gold Bond produces four different powders, Gold Bond Medicated, Extra Strength, Foot and Baby Powders. Gold Bond powders are specifically made to soothe rough, itchy skin and relieve minor redness and irritation. Some products are made for specific uses, such as the Baby and Foot Powders. Gold Bond Baby powder is formulated to protect a baby's sensitive bottom and the foot powder is designed to stop foot odor.
Lotions
The Gold Bond line of lotions includes Body, Foot, Anti-Itch and Ultimate Lotions. As with the powders, the lotions are created to soothe itchy skin while moisturizing the skin. Except for the Ultimate Line, these lotions have a mild skin medication, produced by Chattem, in the lotion, making them more of a topical lotion for skin irritations.
Ultimate Line
Gold Bond Ultimate lotions claim to soothe, soften and nurture skin while healing and protecting. These products do not include the skin medication that is in the regular line of Gold Bond products. Aloe, vitamins, shea butter, moisturizers and silk peptides replace the medicated ingredients. An Ultimate Comfort Powder is included in this line, but is not listed with the Gold Bond Powders because it is talc-free and does not include any topical skin medication.
Foot Products
The Gold Bond foot products are aimed at helping itchy, smelly feet. These include a foot spray, foot powder, foot cream and lotion. Along with the regular foot cream, there is a pain-relieving foot cream with moisturizers, aloe and vitamin E.
Ingredients
The two active ingredients in Gold Bond's medicated products are Menthol (0.8 percent), used as an anti-itch agent and zinc oxide (1.0 percent), used as a skin protectant. The difference between the regular and extra strength products is "Extra Strength Gold Bond Medicated Powder contains a higher level of the two active ingredients," according to the Chattem Company.
The Anti-Itch Cream's active ingredients include pramoxine hydrochloride (1 percent) for pain relief and menthol (1 percent) for itching.
There are a variety of inactive ingredients used in Gold Bond products to soften, such as shea butter, silk peptide matrices, moisturizers and aloe. Other ingredients used in varying amounts, depending on the product, include talcum powder, chamomile, lavender (to soothe skin), eucalyptol, salicylic acid, water, glycerin and petrolatum.
Preservative ingredients vary depending on the product. Consult the label for the specific product for these ingredients.
Uses
Gold Bond products are used for minor skin irritations, burns, rashes, sunburn, to relieve chapped or cracked skin, athlete's foot, jock itch, insect bites and most skin irritations. Besides the topical medication action, the Ultimate lotions may help moisturize, soothe, heal and protect skin from harsh weather and environmental effects that can dry and crack skin.
