5 Ways to Treat Hyperglycemia

1. Recognize the Symptoms of Hyperglycemia

The first step to treating any condition is to be aware of the symptoms. Hyperglycemia is when the blood sugar level is elevated more than it should be--a fasting test indicating levels of more than 126 mg/dL usually means that a person has diabetes that must be managed. People who become hyperglycemic often experience extreme thirst, a dry mouth and urinate more frequently than they did pre-diabetes. Some people with dangerously high blood glucose levels of more than 300 mg/dL experience blurred vision. If you notice these symptoms recurring, speak to your doctor about being tested for diabetes.

2. Increase Glucose Testing

Test your blood glucose up to four times a day--before each meal and at bedtime-- when your levels are above target range so you will know how to treat your hyperglycemia accordingly. Knowing what your levels are at all times can help you decide what adjustments you need to make to your diet and medications during the day. Your doctor may want you to test your urine for ketones as well as glucose. When your body does not have enough insulin and high blood sugar, it can begin to burn fat to use as energy. This burning process produces a toxic acid called ketones that can be very damaging to your health.

3. Follow a Healthy Diet

Hyperglycemia can result when a person with diabetes eats too much overall or eats too large a portion of sweets or other carbohydrates. Portion control and eating the right foods can help treat and prevent high blood sugar. Try limiting the amount of refined and processed foods you consume, while incorporating whole grains and eating plenty of fresh produce. You'll also want to stay adequately hydrated with water while avoiding drinks that contain caffeine or alcohol. Your doctor can help you develop an eating plan based on your blood sugar levels, weight and other factors.

4. Make Lifestyle Changes

Blood sugar levels can fluctuate based on your level of physical activity as well as your physical and mental health. Treat high blood sugar through lifestyle changes that will contribute to your overall health. Begin a daily exercise routine or step it up a notch if you already exercise. Evaluate your life to see how to lessen your daily stress and relax more. Yoga is an ideal activity that can address the need for both physical and mental health.

5. Adjust Medications

Adjusting your dose of insulin if you are insulin-dependent may be a way for you to treat your hyperglycemia, but take a look at any other medicines you take as well. Some prescription medications for unrelated medical conditions may have an impact on your blood glucose levels. Bring a list of all of your current medications to your doctor for an evaluation. He may be able to switch you to another drug that will not increase your blood sugar.
