While herbal remedies have long been around as early medicine, many contemporary herbal remedies fall into one of two categories: those that are just "folklore" and those that have scientifically proven to work. While herbs and other supplements should never be taken without speaking to a healthcare professional, there are some natural herbal remedies that do indeed work for specific ailments.

Bilberry

Bilberry is used as a remedy for diarrhea. It has pectin, which is nothing more than a soluble fiber that will counteract the effects of diarrhea. It should not be taken with blood thinners or with ginger, garlic, fish oil or Vitamin E. Do not take the leaves of the plant as a supplement. The berries of bilberry have a laxative effect and will hinder diarrhea treatment.

Garlic

Garlic is an herbal supplement for conditions, such as a slightly risen blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, and for hyperlipidemia. Side effects for garlic include the garlic odor itself, stomach and gastric upset, and allergic reactions. Garlic should not be taken with anti-coagulants.

Valerian

The herbal supplement of valerian is used for anxiety, restlessness, and for insomnia. It acts as a mild sedative and should not be used with any other sedative or anti-depressant. Side effects for valerian include stomach upset.

Ginger

Ginger is used as an anti-nausea treatment for indigestion and for motion sickness. Use of any ginger supplement may aggravate those with gallstones. Side effects to ginger include heartburn when taking high levels into the body.

St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort is used as an anti-depressant. It is said to work by influencing serotonin levels much like a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). It should not be used with any anti-depressant prescription. People with fair skin may show signs of photosensitivity with its use.
