Diovan (valsartan) is an angiotensen receptor blocker (ARB) drug used in the treatment of hypertension and heart failure. It may sometimes be used for high blood pressure in children. You should never take Diovan if pregnant, or planning to become pregnant. Diovan can harm an unborn baby, causing injury and even death, PDR Health reports. There are some common side effects of Diovan that you should be aware of.
Stomach Pain and Diarrhea
You may experience stomach pain or diarrhea while taking Diovan. This side effect may diminish over time as your body becomes used to this medication.
Headache and Dizziness
Headache and dizziness are common side effects while on Diovan. You may want to use caution while driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication will effect you. These symptoms may lessen over time after your body adjusts to Diovan. You may treat your headache with acetaminophen with your doctor's consent.
Kidney Problems
According to the drug manufacturer, kidney problems may get worse in people who already have kidney disease while taking Diovan. You may need to have your kidney function monitored closely by having frequent blood work. If you develop swelling in your feet, ankles or hands, or have an unexplained weight gain, contact your health care provider.
Low Blood Pressure
You may experience low blood pressure while taking Diovan. Symptoms of hypotension include dizziness, lightheadedness and nausea. If you begin to experience these symptoms, take your blood pressure at home (if possible) and contact your physician. You may need to take a lower dose of Diovan.
Allergic Reaction
In rare cases, Diovan may cause an allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, hives, and swelling of the tongue or throat which may lead do difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms seek emergent medical attention.
Cough and Flu-Like Symptoms
Cough and flu-like symptoms are possible side effects of Diovan. You may experience a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat and cough. If these symptoms occur in conjunction with fever, swollen lymph glands, and green- or yellow-tinged mucus you may have an infection that needs to be treated. Contact your physician for consultation.
Sexual Dysfunction
Impotence, loss of interest in sex or difficulty achieving orgasm may occur while taking Diovan. If these symptoms begin to impact your lifestyle speak to your health care provider. They may be able to switch you to a different medication or prescribe you a drug to treat your sexual dysfunction.
Hyperkalemia
Some patients using Diovan may experience a high blood potassium level. This can cause cardiac arrhythmias, which can lead to cardiac arrest. It is important to have your blood monitored while taking this drug.
