Atrophic scars appear depressed upon the surface of the skin. The area will look as though you have a hole in your skin since missing tissue causes this type of scarring. In most cases, severe acne can lead to atrophic scarring, and the marks are commonly found on the face. At-home scar treatments, such as vitamin E lotions, are not effective on atrophic scars. Ask for a referral for a plastic surgeon or dermatologist from your doctor.

Step 1

Set up an initial consultation with a cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon. The doctor will examine the atrophic scars and request that you give a history on how the scar came about.

Step 2

Inquire about fillers for use on the atrophic scars. Fillers, like collagen, can be injected into the scar site to plump up the area and make it even with the rest of the skin. The results typically last as long as six months, and repeat injections are required to maintain the appearance. Potential side effects include pain at the injection site and inflammation.

Step 3

Find out if laser therapy is appropriate for your atrophic scar. During laser therapy, concentrated light will be used to resurface the skin and promote new skin growth. It may take several sessions to alleviate the atrophic scar. Side effects may include swelling, pain and redness.

Step 4

Undergo dermabrasion to remove the atrophic scar. Another option is to have the doctor plane the skin by sanding down the area with a high speed rotary attachment. New skin will replace the skin that has been sanded down. You may have discomfort and redness after having dermabrasion performed.

Tips and Warnings

  • Before your atrophic scar can be removed, any active acne breakouts will need to be treated. Your doctor may recommend topical solutions or oral medications to clear up the skin.
