Home Remedy for Killing Head Lice

Head lice are minute parasitic insects often found in children's hair; lice infections in school-aged children are second only to the common cold in frequency of occurrence in this age group, according to the Mayo Clinic. The insect measures between 1/10th and 1/8th of an inch long. If possible, avoid using harsh pesticide treatments, and attempt natural home remedies to kill head lice. Be aware, however, that home remedies may not always work and that chemical treatment may be required.

Step 1

Comb the hair using a rat-tailed comb. According to the University of Nebraska Extension website, combing is one of the best natural, non-chemical methods for treating lice. Use a metal fine-toothed comb rather than a plastic comb. Work in a well-lit area with the affected head at eye level. Cover the head with oil, such as olive or a cooking oil, to make combing the hair easier. Separate the hair into small sections---use bobby pins or clips to hold hair in place. Slowly run the comb through the hair. Remove eggs and lice by rinsing the comb in water after each swipe through the hair. Have paper towels handy to manually remove lice from the comb. Flush all paper items and lice remnants down the toilet when your are finished. Soak the comb in hot water for 15 minutes, or boil it for five minutes after the combing. Repeat the combing process daily for two weeks.

Step 2

Shampoo the hair to remove the oil. Use shampoos containing natural insecticidal ingredients such as quassia, citronella, thyme oil or tea tree oil, according to the University of Michigan Health System website. Rinse the hair with vinegar to loosen lice firmly clinging to hair shafts.

Step 3

Wash all clothing and bedding. Use hot, soapy water set at 140 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter. Launder items during treatment or if reinfestation occurs. Dry items in a clothes dryer for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Step 4

Vacuum floors, mattresses and furniture to remove lice and eggs. Remove the vacuum bag or container and place the contents in a garbage bag. Tie the bag shut firmly and place it in an outside trash can. Place large items such as pillows and stuffed animals in a large plastic bag and tie the bag shut. Leave the items in the plastic bag for three to four days to kill live lice, suggests the Mayo Clinic.
