Vitamins are used by the body to perform basic functions such as nerve operation, growth and digestion, all functions that affect the appearance and health of the skin, report doctors at the Food and Drug Administration. Vitamins taken internally are important for overall health, and skin care products and cosmetics contain a variety of vitamins to be used topically to improve the condition of the skin.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is an antioxidant that clears the body of free radicals that can break down collagen and elastin and increase the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Vitamin A can help protect against acne and is used to treat acne in the form of retinoids, which are vitamin A compounds. Vitamin a deficiency can result in dry, scaly skin. Taking more than 5,000 international units (IU) of vitamin A per day, however, can cause skin to blister and peel, report doctors at the American Academy of Dermatology.
B vitamins
B vitamins improve circulation. Good circulation is vital for a healthy glow and for repair and maintenance of the skin. They help to reduce stress and anxiety that can wear on the skin. B complex vitamins contain biotin, folic acid, niacin, riboflavin and thiamin, important for healthy skin. Vitamin B12 is an important ingredient for red cell development that leads to good circulation and healthy skin. The Office of Dietary Supplements recommends adults receive about 2.4mcg of vitamin B12 per day and an average of 2.5mg of B compounds.
Vitamin C
Doctors at the American Academy of Dermatology report that vitamin C is important for healthy skin. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps clear the body of toxins from free radicals that can damage the skin. Free radicals come primarily from environmental pollution like smoke, chemicals and dirt. Pollution can break down collagen and elastin and promote faster aging and slow down the healing process. The antioxidant properties of vitamin C also can be helpful to improve the health and appearance of skin when used topically. Up to 2,000mg of vitamin C can safely be taken by most adults.
Vitamin E
Another antioxidant, vitamin E is important for internal health and is a popular ingredient used in skin care products because it moisturizes, smooths and softens the skin. An average of 1,200 international units of vitamin E per day can protect against sun damage and reverse many of the signs of aging. Acne treatment with vitamin E can be effective for treating the skin disorder. Doctors at the Acne Resource Center report that vitamin E deficiency can lead to dry skin, eczema, psoriasis and slow wound healing.
