Lantus (insulin glargine) is a type of insulin that helps the body turn the food into energy, according to the Mayo Clinic. Insulin helps your body use energy immediately in addition to helping your body store energy. If you have type 1 diabetes, your body does not produce insulin at all. If you have type 2 diabetes, your body either does not produce enough insulin or is not responsive to it. This can cause your blood sugar levels to be too high and lead to serious complications. Lantus can be used along with other diabetes medications to keep your blood sugar under control. However, you must be aware of the associated side effects.

Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is the most common side effect associated with using Lantus, states Drugs.com. This occurs because your dosage may be too high, you may have taken Lantus without eating or your body may be sensitive to the effects of Lantus. This side effect occurs soon after beginning a Lantus regimen. Initial symptoms of hypoglycemia include weakness, drowsiness, confusion, nausea, headache and sweating, according to Drugs.com. You should always carry a piece of candy or glucose tablets to take if you ever experience this side effect. Do not hesitate to call 911 if you are experiencing weakness, drowsiness or confusion. Be sure to tell your doctor if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

Nervous System Side Effects

Lantus may affect your nervous system over the long-term. These side effects occur because Lantus alters your blood sugar levels, which can cause unwanted neurological symptoms. These include dizziness, blurred vision, trouble concentrating, seizure, unconsciousness, nervousness, nightmares, restless sleep, slurred speech, and shakiness, according to the Mayo Clinic. Call 911 immediately if you are experiencing dizziness, blurry vision or feel like you may lose consciousness. Let your doctor know of any neurological symptoms that you may be experiencing. He may be able to give you a different medication or adjust your dosage to reduce these side effects.

Cardiovascular System Side Effects

The Mayo Clinic states that Lantus may cause an increased heart rate, shortness of breath or swelling of the hands, lower legs or feet. This occurs because rapid changes in blood sugar levels can cause an irregular heartbeat or shifts in bodily fluids that can result in swelling. Seek immediate medical treatment if you are experiencing chest pain or shortness of breath for any reason. Other cardiovascular side effects may improve with continued use, but you should let your doctor know you are having these problems.
