Amlodipine besylate (Norvasc) is a blood pressure medication that belongs to a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. According to Drugs.com, amlodipine besylate works by relaxing your blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing heart rate, which ultimately lowers the workload on your heart. Amlodipine besylate is also used to treat angina, or chest pain associated with reduced blood flow to the heart. Although amlodipine besylate is effective in treating high blood pressure, you should be aware of its associated side effects and what to do if you experience them.

Cardiovascular System Side Effects

Amlodipine besylate is used to lower blood pressure; however, this medication may have some unwanted side effects on your cardiovascular system. Drugs.com states that amlodipine besylate may cause lightheadedness, swelling in your hands, feet or ankles, chest pain or irregular heartbeats. Most of these side effects should improve with continued usage of this medication. However, let you doctor know if these side effects do not improve because he may be able to adjust the dosage or switch medications. Always seek immediate medical treatment if you are experiencing chest pain that does not resolve with rest or is associated with other symptoms.

Nervous System Side Effects

According to the Mayo Clinic, amlodipine besylate may have unwanted effects on your nervous system. These effects include headache, sleepiness or unusual drowsiness and weakness. These side effects are not serious and should improve as your body adjusts to the medication. Be sure to take as directed and let your doctor know of other medications that you are taking in case an interaction is contributing to these effects. Use caution when driving or operating heavy machinery if amlodipine besylate makes you drowsy.

Gastrointestinal System Side Effects

Amlodipine besylate is also associated with gastrointestinal side effects. These side effects are not serious and should improve with continued use of amlodipine besylate. You may experience nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth or weight changes. Always let your doctor know that you are experiencing these side effects. You may use an over-the-counter stool softener if you are having problems with constipation.
