Cheerleading is a popular sport for many girls. While the sport doesn't require a lot of equipment, pom poms are a necessity for any good cheerleading squad. Instead of purchasing pom poms, this year why not have a cheerleading party, where the team can make their own! This easy project can be made in minutes, and its low cost will enable you to make a couple of sets for each member of the squad.
Step 1
Determine what color your pom poms will be, and purchase plastic trash bags in this color. You will need about ten bags to complete the project---and remember: you can combine colors for a more creative look.
Step 2
Remove the trash bags from their container. Lay ten of them flat on a hard surface, making sure that all corners are lined up correctly. Trim any strange corners and fold the bags in half. Make sure they are lined up as close as possible.
Step 3
Begin cutting strips in the trash bags. Cut the bags on the open side (not folded side) of the bags, trying to make the strips as even as possible. Thin strips will make a full pom pom, while thicker strips will result in a thinner look.
Step 4
Fold the pom pom lengthwise, so the folded corners are together and the cut strips are still loose. Roll the top folded part of the pom pom into a cylinder, making sure it is as tight as possible. Wrap this part of the pom pom securely with duct tape, or other sturdy tape, making the pom pom handle.
Step 5
Fluff the pom pom by taking a few of the cut strips and rubbing them together between your hands. This creates friction in the pom pom and helps to make it even fuller. Do this for at least 3 or 4 minutes.
