A relaxing back massage may be the best gift of all, and your partner will be surprised when you offer to give a masseuse-grade massage to him as way to show your love and appreciation. Starting with the mood and the ideal massage oil, you can turn a regular day and location into the spa-like setting that is synonymous with relaxation, even before you start to massage. Good technique and anticipating what your subject needs can help you turn a regular back rub into a relaxing back massage.

Step 1

Light a few candles, dim the lights and play relaxing music to help promote a feeling of relaxation and temporary getaway. Mix your massage oil by combining a teaspoon of sweet almond oil with a few drops of an essential oil that will help to enhance the massage experience. Some ideal oils include frankincense for relaxation, sandalwood for a better mood and reducing irritability and rose for peace, says AromaWeb.com.

Step 2

Instruct your subject to lay face-down on a firm but comfortable surface, like a mattress or futon. If you can't easily get around all sides of the surface, you may need to straddle your subject. Offer a towel to lay her head on for more comfort. Dip your fingers in the oil and briefly warm it in your wands by rubbing them together.

Step 3

Start a simple rubbing motion to begin the relaxation. Take your time, and make sure that you spend at least five minutes rubbing all surfaces of the back, concentrating specifically on the areas in which your subject feels the most stress; the shoulders, neck and lower back are all commonly strained each day. Use circular motions on these areas.

Step 4

Press the palm of one hand firmly into the base of the spine, suggests MassageDen.com. Ask your subject how he is feeling before proceeding; you may need to press more lightly. Move all of the way up the spine, pressing down on the side of the spine. When you reach the top, continue down the other side of the spine in the same manner, helping to relieve tension along the spine. Run your thumbs up and down the spine.

Step 5

Make your hands into fists and use them to lightly press all over the surface of the back, focusing especially on the shoulder area, which can often become tightened throughout the course of the day. Use your subject's back as leverage to raise yourself up as you press for a deeper tissue massage.

Step 6

Allow your subject to rest and relax while lying down once the massage has finished. Offer a drink of water and leave the essential oils and relaxing music on to complete the experience.
