Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common among women. They cause frequent urination and painful burning. There are home remedies that can help you ease the discomfort, eliminate bacteria and even prevent recurrences of UTIs. Be sure to consult your physician if these natural treatments do not help, or if there is blood in your urine, you have a fever or vomiting occurs.

Water

Urinary tract infections are brought on by bacteria that form within the system. It is one of the few bodily systems that we have the ability to flush out. Whether or not you choose to take antibiotics, drink plenty of water to keep the urine diluted and flowing through. When you urinate, wipe with toilet paper from front to back to avoid spreading bacteria.

Cranberry

Cranberry has been thought to fight urinary tract infections by destroying bacteria. Many women seem to agree with this home remedy. Cranberry supplements are available, but cranberry juice works fine. It is a good idea to dilute the cranberry juice, though. The high acid can make the symptoms worse. Do not drink cranberry if you are on blood-thinning medication as interactions are possible.

Baking Soda

Baking soda can work as a home remedy for a urinary tract infection if you take it as soon as the symptoms begin. Mix eight ounces of water and a half teaspoon of baking soda. Drinking this can help cure the infection by raising the acid balance (pH) in your urine. Be sure not to douche as that can have a negative effect on the tract's pH.

Avoid Irritants

Certain foods and drinks can irritate the bladder and make urinate even more frequently. If you are trying to cure a UTI, it is best to avoid citrus, spicy foods, aged cheeses, chocolate and caffeine, as well as alcohol and carbonated beverages. Artificial sweeteners can irritate the urinary tract. Also, wear only loose pants or jeans as they bacteria can gather in tight clothing.

Other Options

Drink water and urinate soon after intercourse to flush any bacteria that may be in your system. East blueberries, because they contain proanthocyanidins, may help you avoid UTIs. Castor oil can soothe inflammation if applied to the skin of the abdomen. Cover the area with a hot water bottle or warm towel. For the discomfort of a urinary tract infection, apply a heating pad to the lower area of your stomach.
