A fluctuation in hormone levels can sometimes cause blemishes. When this occurs, there is little one can do about the problem. Blemishes happen for other reasons, though--and sometimes our actions, or lack thereof, are the cause. Everyone wants to have a blemish-free complexion, but not everyone knows how to keep blemishes off the face.

Step 1

Keep your hands and hair away from your face to avoid transferring oils to the skin. An excess amount of oil causes blemishes. Do not rub skin hard, as doing so will stimulate the oil glands and encourage them to produce more oil. Wash your skin two times a day with a cleanser made for your skin type, and make sure your hair is always clean.

Step 2

Use facial creams, lotions, makeup and suntan products that are oil-free. Use hair products that contain no oils to avoid having oil drip onto your face.

Step 3

Get a facial once a month to deep clean your skin and to help balance it. The steaming process used in facials opens the pores, making extraction of embedded oil and dirt more thorough. Clogged pores, if not cleaned, can result in blemished skin. Facial massages help to balance oil production.

Step 4

Drink plenty of water to cleanse your body internally. Flushing your body of impurities helps to promote clear skin. A body that does not consume at least eight glasses of water a day may be more prone to breakouts.

Step 5

Get at least eight hours of sleep a night to keep oil production down. Lack of sleep can lead to imbalances in hormone levels or cause sebum (oil) levels to rise.

Step 6

Use stress reduction methods to keep skin healthy. Stress causes changes in the body and lowers your ability to fight infection; these changes can make acne-prone skin even worse. Get a full-body massage whenever you feel the need to unwind. Massage relaxes the body and assists in the removal of toxins. Have reflexology, which relaxes your body and promotes healing through stimulation of reflex points in the feet and hands. Reflexology also stimulates blood flow, which removes toxins from the body. Listen to soothing music whenever you feel stressed, or engage in some other activity that calms your nerves.

Step 7

Include green vegetables in your diet, such as spinach, broccoli and kale. These foods contain Vitamin A, which contributes to good skin. Consume foods high in Vitamin C, such as cantaloupe, strawberries, tomatoes and kiwi. Vitamin C is also known to promote healthy skin.
