Menstrual irregularities are common in women of all ages. Stress, illness, hormonal irregularities, perimenopause and certain medications can all lead to missed periods, late periods or unusually prolonged bleeding episodes. Fortunately, several medicinal herbs can help to prevent menstrual irregularities, often with fewer side effects than pharmaceutical interventions. Most herbs that regulate menstruation have been the subject of only limited scientific inquiry; however, many are supported by years of traditional use. A woman should consult a qualified practitioner before taking any herbal supplement, particularly if she's taking medication or has a medical condition.
Chasteberry
Also known as vitex or monk's pepper, chasteberry may help to restore menstrual regularity in women suffering from hormonal imbalances. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, preliminary studies have demonstrated that chasteberry can effectively treat premenstrual syndrome and some forms of infertility. Long-term use of chasteberry supplements may improve fertility and menstrual regularity in women.
Black Cohosh
A well-known treatment for menopause symptoms, black cohosh can also help improve menstrual regularity in women of reproductive age. The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements notes that black cohosh contains fragrine, a natural compound chemically similar to estrogen. Black cohosh can help to restore hormone balance and increase blood flow to the pelvis. Women may take moderate-dose black cohosh supplements to induce menstruation when a period is late or absent.
Parsley
Traditionally, herbalists may recommend parsley tea as a gentle menstrual stimulant. Parsley may also be used as a pessary (vaginal suppository); its natural oils can help to soften the cervix and contract the uterus. Parsley may cause an allergic reaction in sensitive people.
