Today there are a myriad of skin care products available, from facial masks to toner to hydration systems. For anyone looking for an inexpensive, effective facial cleanser, exfoliator, toner or facial or hand moisturizer, however, the remedy may be as close as the refrigerator or the kitchen cabinet, and for just a dollar or less per treatment. According to Jyl Steinbeck in "Delicious Living Magazine," "The skin assimilates ingredients better when they are organic and plant and food based."

Avocado-Almond Mask

One example is an avocado-almond mask. Preparation includes mixing one-quarter cup finely chopped almonds, one tablespoon rolled oats, four tablespoons soy milk, and one tablespoon mashed avocado. Mix together and apply to face for about 15 minutes; remove with warm, wet washcloth. Repeat twice a week for best results.

Cucumber Facial Mask

Have oily skin? Puree half an unpeeled cucumber in the blender, and the cucumber mask is ready to apply. Jyl Steinbeck suggests applying cucumber puree to oily facial skin areas and watching the oil disappear as it removes oil, soothes, and firms facial skin. Cucumber has naturally cooling properties and also works to hydrate the skin.

Banana Moisturizing Mask

Banana, a natural source of potassium, makes a luxurious and rich mask for facial skin. Mashed and mixed with sunflower oil or olive oil, it is easily applied to facial areas in need of moisturizing or as an allover facial mask. Repeated daily, the banana moisturizing mask is sure to refresh and renew dried, sun-stressed or aging skin.

Egg White Protein Mask

The egg white protein mask is likely one of the most effective natural toners that is made in the kitchen. Simply whip two egg whites with a fork until frothy; then apply the mixture in a circular motion to facial skin, being careful around the eyes. Leave on face for just 15 to 20 minutes, and wash off with a warm facecloth. The protein in the eggs is a great source of natural skin toner and enhances the elasticity of the facial skin.

Coffee Body Exfoliator

According to an article by Fiona Parker, published by ABC, coffee makes an amazing full-body exfoliator. Easily made with coffee grinds, the coffee body scrub includes three tablespoons of used coffee grounds, two tablespoons of sugar, one tablespoon of salt, and one tablespoon of lemon juice. Repeated once a week, this concoction effectively removes dead skin particles and leaves the skin hydrated and refreshed.
