4 Ways to Exercise With Your Toddler

1. Double the Trouble

The "terrible twos" have long been touted as one of the most trying times when dealing with toddlers, but it can seem even more difficult for a parent who wants to stay fit. Unfortunately, the demands and schedules of parenthood can often make it hard to stick to a regular exercise routine. Instead of trying to fit physical fitness around your parenting lifestyle, why not try and exercise with your toddler? The first step to exercising with your toddler is to assess your child's mood that day (it is easier to work with her than against her) and move on from there.

2. Learn While Moving

If your little one is in the mood to go outside, then why not try popping her in a stroller and going for a cardiovascular walk or jog, making sure to engage her along the way. Talk about the animals and flowers that you see, or set a final goal as a reward for the long walk (stop at a park two miles away or walk to your local farmers market for fresh fruit.) If your toddler wants to play with you, then try setting up a game in the backyard that requires movement. Take turns picking an animal and then move like that animal together: jump like a bunny, run like a cheetah, or squat like a frog. It may seem silly, but your toddler will love the interaction and play (and you will love the muscles these movements create).

3. Play a Game

If the weather is dreary or your little one wants to stay indoors, then try doing children's yoga together by researching videos at www.yogakids.com or even purchasing games available like "Yoga Bingo" and "The Yoga Garden" game. Try creating your own toddler-friendly game simply by putting the radio on shuffle and trying to dance and move differently with each song. It may seem simple, but 20 minutes of stomping, jumping and shaking with your toddler can really help you break a sweat. Another way to get moving with your toddler is to watch television programs together that incorporate movement, such as "Hip Hop Harry" or the "Sesame Street Dance and Move" box set. Of course, it only counts if you join your toddler in dancing and moving, so try and jump in every chance you get.

4. Squeeze It In

In the end, every toddler is going to have days where he does not want to exercise or participate in your quest to stay fit. Although it is more fun to interact and move with your little one, it is essential for your child to understand that parents need their personal time too. During cranky moments, try setting him up with a game or toy in a quiet area and do an exercise tape of your own nearby. When in doubt, try to squeeze fitness into your daily routine however possible (every little bit counts). If your toddler is in the bubble bath, then do jumping jacks and squats while you watch over him. If your little one is eating in his high chair, try doing push-ups leaning against the kitchen counter, or drop comfortably to the floor for a set of crunches. It doesn't always matter how you get moving as a busy parent; just try to break a sweat (or do a "bunny hop") a little bit each day.
