Plan an Active Vacation

Sports, hiking, climbing and dancing can be a part of your retreat. If this sounds like a way to treat yourself and you would like more a regimented vacation experience, a fitness-themed vacation could be for you.

Forget the Rental Car

If a fitness vacation doesn't suit you, put on some comfortable shoes, set out on foot and see the sights. You don't have to sprint or even get too sweaty but don't pass up the chance to ride a bike or roller blade.

Pack Healthy Snacks

Throw some fruit, nuts and whole-grain crackers into your bag. You can keep your energy up between meals and save money at the same time. The Department of Health and Human Services' guidelines for diet and exercise can be adapted to your home away from home.

Don't Drink Too Much

One drink a day for men and two drinks for women is considered moderation. If you want to indulge while you are on vacation, remember that alcohol has the emptiest of calories.

Order Healthy Choices

You want to experience the flavors of the local culture, and there is nothing wrong with that. But when possible ask local chefs to bake it, broil it, grill it or steam it.

Eat Before You Get Too Hungry

When you feel hungry, naturally you're vulnerable to eating whatever you can get your hands on. Plan to have your snacks handy.

Watch Portions

Resist the urge to devour every morsel of every over-sized portion served. It's uncomfortable to walk around stuffed to bursting and besides, you'll survive to taste again. Grazing or eating mini-portions throughout the day keeps your energy up and can help you burn calories.

Drink Plenty of Fluids

Sometimes thirst masks itself as hunger. Water is the perfect beverage, but fruit juices with no added sugar can also give you an energy boost.

Think

Before you eat an entire dough and powdered-sugar bomb, decide if it's really worth it. The Harvard School of Public Health advises those seeking to shed pounds to avoid fad diets and keep your goals in front of you. However, finishing the race strong means not giving up if you temporarily fall to temptation.

Don't Worry About Perfection

Avoid over-exertion and over-spending that causes stress leading to over-eating. Remember why you went on vacation and have fun.
