Your feet have more sweat glands than any other part of the body, according to ePodiatry. Foot odor is caused by bacteria known as isovaleric acid. When sweat becomes trapped inside your footwear, it can lead to smelly feet. Foot odor can be even worse when sweat and bacteria combine with the synthetic materials used in some shoes. Stress and hormonal changes also may make you more prone to stinky feet. Good hygiene practices are very important to help prevent foot odor.

Foot Hygiene

Step 1

Take a bath or shower every day to help control the amount of bacteria on your feet. Wash your feet with an antibacterial soap with a scrub brush or wash cloth to slough off dead skin cells. Go between each toe with your cloth or brush and thoroughly wash.

Step 2

Dry your feet to halt the growth microorganisms that flourish in moist spaces between your toes. Sprinkle talcum powder or baking soda on the soles of your feet to help absorb sweat and reduce bacterial growth.

Step 3

Slip out of your shoes and go barefoot whenever possible. Give your feet a chance to air out. Apply antiperspirant to the soles of your feet each night.

Footwear

Step 1

Select shoes that are made of natural materials like canvas, leather or mesh, because they will allow your feet to breath. Some synthetic materials used in shoes, when mixed with sweat and bacteria, can produce smelly feet.

Step 2

Take turns wearing different pairs of shoes. Footwear requires a couple of days to completely dry out. Take out the innersoles of your shoes to expedite drying.

Step 3

Wear thick, soft cotton or wool socks because they will do the best job of absorbing moisture. Avoid wearing nylon socks and choose pantyhose that have cotton soles.

Step 4

Change your socks at least once per day. Thoroughly dry your feet before putting on clean socks.
