Static hair often plagues those with fine hair through the dry winter months. The constant flyaways, rogue hairs and perpetual hat-head are enough to make you want to get your hair cut off. But you don't need shorter hair or a tight ponytail to stop static cling in your hair. You can use everyday and fast fixes to keep your hair static-free and looking good, even through the notoriously dry seasons and climates.

Step 1

Use a regular dryer sheet to remove some of the static from your hair. Dryer sheets are coated in a fabric softener, which helps to weigh hair down and reduce static cling. Just section your hair off and run an unused dryer sheet over all portions of your hair, concentrating on the top. Slip one in your bag for fast fixes on the fly.

Step 2

Slip on your favorite hand moisturizer or lip balm, and rub the excess into your hair. Both hand moisturizer and lip balm are highly moisturizing, and will give some hydration to your thirsty locks. Just rub into your skin as usual, and when finished, run your hands through your hair to stop static quickly and discreetly.

Step 3

Switch from an aerosol hairspray at the end of your styling process to using a mousse or gel at the beginning. Most hairsprays are made with alcohol, an ingredient which is extremely drying and may contribute to your static hair problem. Use a more weighty styling product and blow dry your hair so that it stays firmly in place all day.

Step 4

Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Look for those that contain silicone, an ingredient that coats the hair and makes it heavier and shinier--and less likely to fly away. Do a weekly deep conditioning treatment to infuse moisture into your hair so it is less likely to be affected by static.

Step 5

Swap your rubber shoes and synthetic brush for leather shoes and a natural bristle brush, says Oprah.com. Rubber and synthetic bristles are static conductors, which may cause you to experience staticky hair and clothes. Switching to natural products, especially when it comes to your shoes, can help reduce friction that may be causing your hair static.
