Cartia XT is one of the many brand names in the United States for the generic drug diltiazem. It is a calcium channel blocker used in the treatment of severe chest pain, called angina, and hypertension or high blood pressure. Cartia XT helps decrease the amount of work your heart must exert by getting more oxygen to it and decreasing the constriction of your blood vessels. Cartia XT is administered as extended-release capsules.
Flu-like Symptoms
Cartia XT has been shown to produce several serious common side effects that mimic symptoms of a common cold or flu. For example, you experience congestion of sinuses and nasal passages when taking this medication. You may develop a cough because of Cartia XT and get a runny nose. The drug also may induce fever, throat soreness or dryness, and you may feel hoarse while taking it. Consult your physician about these side effects if they persist or worsen.
Swallowing/Bowel Problems
Taking Cartia XT also may produce some eating problems. For example, a serious common side effect of the drug is having trouble swallowing. Tell your doctor about this immediately. You also may be constipated when you first take the medicine, making it difficult for you to have a bowel movement. This side effect, however, is usually temporary and will vanish as your body acclimates to Cartia XT.
Pain
Diltiazem also can cause other side effects such as pain in the body, glandular swelling or tenderness in your neck and changes in the quality of your voice. Less serious and temporary side effects produced by Cartia XT include headaches, flushing in your face and dizziness. You also may experience a general feeling of bodily weakness that will pass as you get used to the medication.
