A good scalp massage can soothe headaches, stimulate hair growth and make you feel good all over, thanks to the many nerve endings and blood vessels in your scalp. While a salon scalp massage is an indulgence, it's not difficult to replicate the experience yourself at home. Make a scalp massage an event by turning down the lights and relaxing in a comfortable spot, or use a scalp massage to make your everyday showers a little more special.
Step 1
Pour a teaspoon or two of hair oil into your hands, rub your palms vigorously together and apply the oil to your scalp thoroughly. Try to spread the oil over your entire scalp.
Step 2
Place your hands on either side of your head so that the pads of your fingers are pressed against the part of your skull that curves above your ears.
Step 3
Press gently but firmly with the pads of your fingers so that you move the skin above your ears back and forth about 1 inch. Use your fingers to actually move the skin back and forth instead of just sliding your fingers across the surface of the skin.
Step 4
Slide your fingers up so that the pads of your fingers are pressed against your temples. Move your fingers in small circles, pressing gently as you go.
Step 5
Move your hands to the back of your head so that your finger tips press firmly against the base of your skull. Press gently, moving your fingers upward and outward in small, steady circles.
Step 6
Continue to reposition your fingers around your scalp, using the same gentle pressure to trace small circles around your head, targeting an area of 1 to 2 inches at a time. Continue until you've covered your entire head.
Tips and Warnings
- If you don't have time for a full massage, try brushing your scalp vigorously with a soft-bristled brush. It's a quick way to get similar effects. If you're feeling particularly tense, pick up a pinch of your skin by squeezing it between your thumb and forefinger for about 20 seconds and then releasing your skin again.
