Skin care products you buy from stores or that your dermatologist prescribes are expensive and can sometimes be harsh and drying to sensitive skin. Natural ingredients found as staples in most kitchens are an effective way to cleanse and exfoliate the skin with all the benefits of costly products and without the side effects from strong chemicals or drying preservatives.
You can cleanse your skin with dairy products and citrus fruits. Dairy products, such as milk and plain yogurt, remove impurities and brighten the skin. They also contain lactic acid, a natural alpha hydroxy acid that keeps skin fresh and youthful. Citrus fruits contain citric acid, a natural antiseptic to kill bacteria within the pores for clear and healthy skin.

Step 1

Stir 1 tbsp. of lemon juice into an 8 oz. cup of plain yogurt. Use as a facial cleanser twice a day, and store in the refrigerator. The yogurt and lemon contain mild skin-lightening capabilities to fade skin discoloration from acne scaring and premature aging.

Step 2

Combine 1 tsp. of honey with 1 tsp. of white or brown sugar to make a daily facial scrub. Sugar contains glycolic acid to repair damaged skin as it exfoliates. Honey contains potassium, a natural antibacterial agent to clear skin without drying it out.

Step 3

Remove makeup with pure extra virgin olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil has cleansing as well as moisturizing capabilities to keep skin clear and soft while preventing fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth and eyes.

Step 4

Use witch hazel as a natural cleansing astringent after washing and exfoliating the face. Witch hazel has antioxidant properties and removes any leftover residue from pores.

Step 5

Conduct a pore-purging mask once a week to remove excess oil and impurities from the skin. Combine 1 tbsp. of brewer's yeast with ½ tbsp. of water. When it forms putty, spread it over your face and allow it to dry for 15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.

Tips and Warnings

  • Milk and honey also works as a gentle cleanser. Dry milk cleanses the skin and lightly polishes it. Replace water with lemon juice in the brewer's yeast mask for added skin clarity. Witch hazel can also be used to treat and prevent spider veins.
  • Avoid contact with eyes. Discard yogurt cleanser after two weeks.
