Road bike tires need to be checked weekly to ensure that they are inflated to an ideal PSI or pounds per square inch. Tires with too little air in them will slow the rider down, can be easily punctured and won't perform at an optimal level. Efficient riding takes place when the air in the tires is at an ideal level. A little knowledge goes a long way.

Step 1

Stabilize the road bike. Recruit a helper to hold it upright, lean it against a sturdy object so it won't fall or place it securely in a bike repair stand.

Step 2

Locate the bike tire tube stem which is found along the inside of the bicycle rim.

Step 3

Unscrew the black cap and remove. Open the valve located on the end of the stem by twisting it clockwise.

Step 4

Attach the bicycle pump to the valve. This is accomplished by inserting the opening on the bike pump over the valve on the tube stem. Once in place, flip the locking mechanism--usually a lever--into place.

Step 5

Find the recommended PSI for the tire by looking on the sidewall of the tire. The PSI generally falls between 80 and 120. While keeping an eye on the bicycle pump gauge, begin pumping air into the tube. Stop when the gauge reaches the desired PSI, which is often 100 for road biking.

Step 6

Open the locking lever and remove the pump from the tube stem. Retighten the stem by turning it counterclockwise. Replace the black cap.
