Dark circles under the eyes occur when blood vessels swell behind the eyes, or when the pigment underneath the eyes darkens due to sun exposure or heredity. Puffy circles, on the other hand, occur because of fluid retention or sagging skin underneath the eyes due to age. Dark circles and puffy eyes can be treated at home and do not require medical treatment.

Step 1

Prop your head up with an extra pillow while you sleep, suggests the Mayo Clinic. Keeping your head elevated will prevent swelling underneath the eyes. Sleep on your back to help prevent fluid from accumulating underneath the eyes.

Step 2

Stay away from allergens when possible. Allergens can cause fluid to pool underneath the eyes and cause sinus congestion, which can cause dark circles under the eyes, says the Mayo Clinic. If you must be in an environment you are allergic to, take an over-the-counter antihistamine to reduce swelling and dark circles.

Step 3

Apply a cold compress to the eyes to help constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling under the eyes. Place a clean washcloth rinsed in cold water over the eye area for several minutes throughout the day as needed to prevent dark circles and puffiness under the eyes.

Step 4

Limit your intake of salty foods such as potato chips, canned soups and canned vegetables. Salty foods can cause water retention, which will make eyes look puffier.

Step 5

Sleep 7 to 8 hours a night, recommends the Mayo Clinic. Getting adequate sleep can help reduce the appearance of puffy eyes and prevent dark under-eye circles from looking worse.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wear sunscreen when going outside to prevent dark circles under the eyes from getting worse. Consult a doctor if you have additional symptoms or if your vision is affected.
  • If you cannot close your eyes completely, which is a symptom of thyroid disease, contact a doctor immediately.
