Smart Shopping for Bicycle Panniers

Panniers are the bags that hang on either side of the rear wheel of a touring bike. They permit a cyclist to travel self-contained, carrying clothes and other items just like a rider on a horse carries saddlebags. Sometimes, a touring cyclist will also have a second set of panniers that hang on each side of the front wheel, as well, attached via a special rack. The simplest panniers are cloth or metal holders that fold up against the bike when there is nothing in them. Casual riders use these either singly or in pairs for groceries, books or lunch.

What to Look for

Shop for panniers that will hold what you need to carry. If you are about to set off on a multi-day camping tour, buy a rugged set of nylon or synthetic-material rear panniers that close with a flap and a clasp and are big enough for your clothes and other gear. Test ride your bike to make sure you have enough clearance for your pedals when the panniers are fully loaded. Some models are made with waterproof liners, while others can easily be covered by a large piece of plastic or a large garbage bag in an emergency. Expect to pay $80 to $300 for a set of rear panniers. A single, grocery-type bag costs $15 to $50.

Common Pitfalls

Beware of buying panniers so large that when packed, your bike becomes heavier than is comfortable for a touring trip. Most riders are better off without front panniers, which increase the difficulty in steering a bike. If your bike already has a rack, make certain the panniers have latches that will attach easily to it. When in doubt, choose smaller bags over larger ones.
