If you have ever had a massage, you know that the kind of massage oil that is used can make a big difference. Few people want to feel slicked down, but most will appreciate an oil that allows the masseur to do his work well. Make your own massage oil at home. Use a combination of different oils to make your massage oil. Choose from different plant, nut and fruit oils available online, in health and grocery stores. Experiment to see which you like and add essential oils extracted from plants, flowers and herbs to add lovely scents that can make any massage deeply relaxing.
Step 1
Pour 3 oz. jojoba oil into a reusable, squeezable plastic bottle. Add 2 oz. of coconut, sweet almond or sesame oil.
Make a massage oil from any combination of the following oils: corn, peanut, olive, safflower or canola. You can buy most of these at a large grocery store. For example, use the most bland oil--safflower--as the carrier oil and add peanut, corn or canola.
Step 2
Swirl to combine and store in a dark place out of the sun to preserve.
Step 3
Add 15 to 20 drops each of your favorite essential oils to a 12-oz. container of massage body oil. You can buy essential oils in health food stores, massage supply outlets and online. Remember that each essential oil has different properties and make your selections based on that. For example, rosemary, lemon, juniper, pine and spruce oils are invigorating and activating. On the other hand, lavender, chamomile, clary sage and rose geranium have a sedative or relaxing effect.
Tips and Warnings
- Begin by making a small amount of massage oil to start and once you determine it suits you, make a larger batch the next time. Different blends of oils will appeal to different tastes.
