Handlebar grips ensure that riders have good control over their bikes, allowing them to turn or stop when necessary. Grips will wear out with regular use, and it is important to know how to replace them. This simple project requires only the use of an Allen wrench and some lubricant.

Step 1

Use a 5mm Allen wrench to remove the bar ends. When taking the bar ends off of the handlebars, be careful not to strip the bolt.

Step 2

Remove the old grips. This can be done by either using a box cutter (be careful not to scratch the bars), or placing a small flathead screwdriver under each grip, squirting in some rubbing alcohol or hairspray between the grip and the bar, and sliding the grip off.

Step 3

Apply a thin layer of rubbing alcohol or hairspray to the inside of the new grips, and carefully slide them onto the bar.

Step 4

Place the bar ends back onto the handlebars. Just like when you removed the bar ends, be careful not to over-tighten them, as this can damage the bars.

Things You'll Need

  • 5mm Allen wrench
  • Rubbing alcohol/hairspray
  • Screwdriver
