Self-image, the foundation for self-esteem, consists of perceived self-worth and value. Self-image influences how people relate to life and relationships--a negative self-image may cause withdrawal, social angst and depression. A positive self-image involves accepting yourself for who you are and acknowledging your inherent self worth. Self-image is influenced by family, friends, the media and external surroundings. There is always room to boost and improve your self-image, contributing to higher self-esteem.

Step 1

Challenge negative thoughts that hinder positive self-image and replace them with positive self affirmations. Record recurring negative self talk that makes you feel bad about yourself and jot down positive future responses. It is easier to do this ahead of time and access the journal when your self-image is low, rather than try to think of positive things when you are feeling low. For example, if you think you are a failure because you scored lower than you would like on a test, stop the thought and congratulate yourself for studying so hard and giving the exam your best effort.

Step 2

Keep an affirmation journal. Write down three different things you like about yourself each day. What you write down does not have to be elaborate, just affirming. Create a positive self-image by noticing all the different characteristics and behaviors that you appreciate about yourself.

Step 3

Develop your strengths by engaging in activities that you enjoy. Pick up a hobby, volunteer, join a sports team or do anything that makes you feel good about your involvement. Accomplishment and involvement in fun activities contribute to boosts in self-image.

Step 4

Stop comparing yourself to others. Accept yourself for who you are. Celebrate your special body shape, characteristics and looks. Question media and society's portrayal of self-image and self-esteem. Separate your self-image from distorted and air-brushed pictures of models and actresses. Write down all the different ways your body helps you and what it has allowed you to achieve throughout your life. Avoid looking at magazines or watching TV shows that make you feel bad about yourself and lower your self-image.

Step 5

Check that your self-expectations are realistic; adjust them accordingly. If you think that you "should" or "must" do something, assess if that is truly the case. Avoid placing extreme demands on yourself, and do not punish yourself for dismissing tasks that are not necessary. Placing unnecessary stress on yourself to accomplish things and not meeting unrealistic demands lowers your self-image. Be patient and kind with yourself.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you believe that your self-image is interfering with your life, get help. Contact a social worker, psychologist or mental health counselor. Create a support group with your friends and discuss what challenges your self-images. Brainstorm different ways to improve your self-image.
