More than 3 million people in the United States suffer from constipation at least some of the time, according to the National Health Interview Survey. Constipation is identified as having fewer than three bowel movements per week; having hard, difficult-to-pass bowel movements; and a feeling that you need to move your bowels but you can't. Nearly all constipation is caused by a lack of fiber and fluid in the diet, so most home remedies focus on those issues for treatment.

Add More Fiber

The average adult needs at least 25 grams of fiber per day to keep the digestive tract moving smoothly. Add fiber to your diet, and your constipation could be relieved. In fact, many over-the-counter constipation remedies are basically fiber mixed with water.

Add Some Sugar

A tablespoon of honey added to a cup of juice or water will help constipation, as the sweetness from the honey helps draw water to the colon and soften the stool. Corn syrup and molasses are also suggested additives to liquid, for the same reason.

Warm Water Cleanse

The juice of half a lime or lemon and a dash of salt mixed with 8 oz. of water and sipped upon awakening will help ease constipation, according to Home-Remedies-For-You.com.

Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera juice has a mild laxative effect, according to the Mayo Clinic.
