Scalp oil can help deeply moisturize dry hair or a dry scalp, overnight and you can shampoo it out in the morning. Or, you can use it as a leave-in hair conditioner that provides some sunscreen protection. Using plant-based oils and essential oils extracted from flowers, herbs and plants creates a scalp oil that will perfume your hair, too.

Step 1

Pour 4 oz. of jojoba oil (Simmondsia chinensis) in a dark-colored, glass container. Add 15 drops of rosemary essential oil for dark hair. If you have blond hair, use 15 drops of chamomile. For oily hair, add 10 drops of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oil. For dry hair, add 10 drops of lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) essential oil.
Keep sealed and store in a dark place out of the sun.

Step 2

Shampoo and condition your hair and blot it dry with a towel. For an overnight scalp oil to deeply condition damaged or dry hair, pour 2 to 3 tbsp. of the homemade scalp oil into your palm. Work it through your hair and then use a wide-toothed comb to thoroughly comb through hair. Wrap your hair in a clean, dry towel and leave in overnight. Shampoo and condition hair again in the morning and style as usual.

Step 3

Comb through 1 tbsp. of the scalp oil. Do this on clean, dry hair. Meticulously distribute the oil from scalp to the ends. Use this scalp oil as a daily, leave-in hair sunscreen. Jojoba oil has a sun protection factor about 8 SPF.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do a skin patch test before using essential oils by dabbing a small amount on the inside of your elbow and covering with a bandage for 24 hours. If you develop any skin irritation, discontinue use and cleanse the skin.
