The first trimester of pregnancy is an exciting time for a new mother-to-be, but the new symptoms of pregnancy may be difficult to tolerate. Many women wonder if what they are feeling is considered normal. Not all women will experience the same signs and symptoms. Symptoms may also vary from one pregnancy to the next. There are some common symptoms of pregnancy that you should be aware of.
Breast Tenderness and Changes
Breast tenderness and soreness is a common symptom in the first trimester. It occurs because of the rising hormones of the pregnancy. The tenderness usually decreases after the first trimester, but some women may experience it for the duration of their pregnancy. You may also notice that the areola appears larger and darker in color. Your body is preparing itself to breastfeed your new baby. Warm compresses and wearing a supportive bra may be helpful in alleviating breast tenderness.
Nausea and Vomiting
This well-known pregnancy symptom shows up two to eight weeks after conception, reports the American Pregnancy Association. This is thought to be because of the rising hormones of pregnancy, especially estrogen, which slows the gastrointestinal system and makes you more prone to nausea and vomiting. For many women, it usually diminishes by the second trimester. Some may go on to experience nausea and vomiting for the full nine months.
Fatigue
Many women will experience fatigue throughout the first trimester. According to BabyZone, this symptom may appear one to six weeks after conception. You may feel a bit more tired or sleepier than usual. Your body is expending a lot of energy to the growing fetus. It is important to get enough rest during this time. Making sure you sleep at least eight hours each night and taking a mid-day nap may help you to feel more energized throughout the day.
Urinary Frequency
You may experience urinary frequency during the first trimester, because the growing uterus is placing additional pressure on your bladder. If you are waking up frequently to use the restroom during the night, avoid drinking liquids two hours prior to bedtime. Do not hold in your urine, this may predispose you to developing a urinary tract infection.
Headache
As the estrogen and progesterone in your body continue to rise in the first trimester, you may experience frequent headaches. This symptom should diminish as your body adjusts to its altered hormone levels. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is acceptable during pregnancy and is considered safe. Contact your obstetrician prior to taking any medications.
