Stress, illness and midlife hormone fluctuations can all contribute to a low libido. Nutritional supplements and medicinal herbs can help to address many of the underlying problems that can create sexual dysfunction. While some libido-enhancing supplements work only for one gender, several can improve sexual vitality in men and women alike. Anyone experiencing persistent sexual problems should consult a qualified practitioner; a low libido may be a symptom of depression or another medical condition. Use supplements only under the guidance of a professional if you are taking medication or have a medical condition.

Yohimbe

The evergreen shrub yohimbe has been used for millenia as a treatment for low libido in both men and women. Yohimbine, an extract of yohimbe, is sold in the United States as Promocil, a pharmaceutical treatment for erectile dysfunction. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) notes that yohimbe is most commonly sold as a treatment for male impotence; however, it does not affect estrogen or testosterone levels and may be used to treat female sexual problems. The NIH warns that yohimbe is associated with several significant side effects and drug interactions.

Maca

Renowned for its ability to increase both sexual desire and fertility, maca root is extremely useful for reviving the libido in both men and women. A 2002 review by GF Gonazles et al, published in the December 2002 issue of the medical journal "Andrologia," found that men taking maca root experienced a higher rate of fertility and sexual desire than men taking a placebo. Many herbalists, including "Hot Plants" author Chris Kilham, recommend it as a treatment for low libido in women, as well.

Arginine

The NIH says that the amino acid L-arginine acts as a precursor to nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels and may enhance blood flow to the genitals. The NIH notes that several early trials have demonstrated that arginine may improve sexual response in both men and women.

Horny Goat Weed

According to Chinese tradition, a Chinese goatherd discovered the abilities of horny goat weed after his goats ate a large quantity of it and began breeding prolifically. Like arginine, extracts of horny goat weed appear to improve genital blood flow by increasing the amount of nitric oxide in blood vessels. While horny goat weed is most commonly sold as a men's product, it is equally effective for women.

Ginseng

Another traditional Chinese herb, ginseng may help to improve libido, particularly during times of stress. Asian ginseng is pharmacologicaly classified as an adaptogen; it enables the body to adapt to physical or emotional stress with fewer fluctuations in libido, sleep or appetite. The NIH explains that ginseng has been studied as a treatment for erectile dysfunction in men and menopause-related sexual problems in women. Similar herbs include ashwagandha, rhodiola and eleuthero.
