According to the National Institute of Mental Health, tens of millions of adult Americans suffer from anxiety disorders. The Mayo Clinic advises that having occasional anxiety is normal, but frequent and intense feelings of worry or fear that interfere with daily life should be treated. There are several types of anxiety disorders, which doctors typically treat using prescription drugs and other psychological treatments. Anxiety is also treatable using certain natural supplements.

Passionflower

For years, herbalists in the Americas and Europe have used passionflower to treat insomnia and anxiety. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, this flowering plant promotes the release of GABA in the brain, allowing you to relax. The effects of passionflower are not as strong as valerian or kava kava. Typically, preparations of passionflower also include valerian, lemon balm and other herbs. Common forms of this supplement include tinctures, liquid extracts, teas or infusions.

Valerian

Valerian is a perennial plant with fragrant pink or white flowers. Native to Europe, South Africa and Asia, this plant is now found in the United States. According to the Insight Journal, valerian use dates back centuries for the treatment of sleeplessness, nervousness, hysteria and epilepsy. The Insight Journal says that valerian affects GABA receptors in the brain, making more of this neurotransmitter available for use. You can find valerian supplements in the form of teas, capsules or tablets.

Kava (Piper methysticum)

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, kava helps to elevate the mood, increase the sense of well-being and contentment, and help a person feel more relaxed. Centuries ago, Pacific Islanders began using kava as a ceremonial drink. Many report that kava has an effect similar to that of an alcoholic drink. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings stating that kava may cause liver damage. Kava can be found in different forms around the world, including as whole kava roots, liquid extract, tinctures, capsules and tablets.

American Skullcap

Native to America, this plant has been used for centuries to treat anxiety, nervous tension and convulsions. Not much research has looked at the affects American Skullcap has on the brain or its side effects. You can find American skullcap as a liquid extract or as a powder. American skullcap typically gets combined with other calming herbs.

Damiana

According to herbwisdom.com, herbalists indicate damiana for use in people with anxiety, nervousness and mild depression, especially when related to sexual factors. As a general tonic, this herb also improves a person's overall wellness.

Warning

As with all medications, herbal supplements can interfere with various drugs. Ask your medical professional before you begin using any supplement.
