Clindesse (clindamycin vaginal cream) is a prescription medication indicated for the treatment of a vaginal infection called bacterial vaginosis. This medication is administered as a single-dose vaginal treatment and works by preventing the growth of bacteria within the vagina. On Jan. 28, 2009, the Ther-Rx Corp. voluntarily recalled this medication due to subpar manufacturing procedures.
Stomach Upset
After using Clindesse, you can experience mild diarrhea that can cause you to experience frequent bowel movements, yielding loose or watery stools. Certain women may also develop abdominal pain, cramping or bloating in conjunction with diarrhea. This medication can cause an overgrowth of bacteria within your colon, which can lead to a potentially fatal condition called colitis. Contact your doctor or gynecologist immediately if you experience severe diarrhea accompanied by blood or mucus within your stools.
Vaginal Infection
This medication can alter the balance of naturally occurring vaginal bacteria. If this occurs, you can develop an additional fungal infection called a vaginal yeast infection. In clinical trials, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that 14 percent of women getting treatment with this medication developed a vaginal fungal infection. This infection can lead to side effects including thick, white vaginal discharge that may be accompanied by severe vaginal itching, inflammation or burning. Contact your doctor if you develop any of these side effects after taking Clindesse. You may require additional antifungal medication to resolve vaginal yeast infection symptoms.
Allergic Reaction
An allergic reaction can cause side effects such as hives, itching, rash, chest tightness, oral swelling or breathing difficulties. If these side effects occur, contact your medical provider immediately.
