It isn't a problem that's easy to hide. Underarm odor is noticeable to anyone who stands close to you. The smell easily transfers to your clothing, making the whole situation seem that much worse. For some, this is a hygiene issue. For others, they may suffer from axilary hyperhidrosis, which causes them to sweat more. It's the combination of bacteria found on the skin mixing with perspiration that ultimately causes the odor. Whatever the reason, there are several things you can do to help eliminate it.
Step 1
Wash under your arms twice daily. An antibacterial soap can help to eliminate the bacteria on your skin that can lead to odors later. Wash with warm water, and rinse well. Dry under your arms to eliminate excess moisture with an absorbent, clean, dry towel.
Step 2
Apply a deodorant or antiperspirant after you shower and as often as you need it throughout the day. Antiperspirants help to disrupt sweat production with aluminum salts. This blocks the sweat glands, so the bacteria never gets a chance to mix with the perspiration. Deodorants act as an antiseptic that retards bacterial growth. Take time to experiment, and find which type and brand work best for you.
Step 3
Wear clean clothes, especially after you bathe. Light-colored, cotton clothing allows air to flow through and circulate around the body to keep you cool. Light-colored clothing also helps to reflect sunlight. Dark-colored clothing tends to absorb heat and may make you sweat more. Don't wear tight clothing that restricts airflow, as this will make the odor worse. If odors are in your clothing, add 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle the next time you wash them.
Step 4
Make changes to your diet to eliminate garlic, onions and other foods and spices with pungent odors. Eating a balanced diet can help to curb unpleasant odors your body may be emitting. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated, which lends to keeping your body cool and sweating less.
Step 5
Keep moist towelettes, such as baby wipes, on hand to wipe away excess perspiration throughout the day. Reducing the sweat on your body can help to reduce the odor.
