How to Catch a Lacrosse Ball

Catching a lacrosse ball takes focus and concentration. It also requires a proper understanding of the physics of the game. New players often try to meet the ball too quickly, resulting in a lost catch. The idea is to absorb the force of the throw with the net on the lacrosse stick head. A good way to imagine how to catch a lacrosse ball is to think of it as a raw egg. Because eggs are so delicate, a gentle, energy-absorbing catch is required to prevent it from breaking. The same principle is used when catching a lacrosse ball.

Step 1

Grip the lacrosse stick softly, with one hand at the base of the handle and the other hand between the middle of the handle and throat of the lacrosse stick near the head.

Step 2

Hold the stick forward and slightly to the side. Position the stick straight up and down, with the open portion of the head facing outward and slightly to the side of your face. This will allow you to spot the ball more accurately.

Step 3

Do not hold the stick sideways to catch the ball. This action reduces catching accuracy and may allow the ball to skip out of the head.

Step 4

Face the passer. Place the head of the lacrosse stick in the line of fire of the ball and watch the ball all the way to the head of your lacrosse stick.

Step 5

Draw the lacrosse stick head back to absorb the impact when the ball hits the net in the head. Hold the lacrosse stick in this position, momentarily, to allow the ball to settle in the pocket of the net.
