Flexeril is a muscle relaxant that works by blocking pain signals in the brain stem. Flexeril may be prescribed if you are experiencing muscle pain, strains, sprains or spasms. Flexeril must be used in addition to rest, physical therapy and other recommendations provided by your doctor. Although Flexeril may be beneficial in treating your muscular condition, there are significant side effects associated with it, particularly those that involve the nervous system.

Nervous System Side Effects

Although Flexeril blocks pain receptors in your brain, it may also block other receptors that are not related to pain. This generalized receptor blocking activity can result in significant side effects. Drugs.com states that you should stop using Flexeril and call your doctor if you experience sudden numbness or weakness, headache, confusion, vision problems, speech problems balance problems, confusion, hallucinations or seizure. Do not risk driving or operating heavy machinery if you are experiencing these serious neurological side effects. In addition, people who take Flexeril will commonly experience drowsiness, particularly if this is the first time they have taken the medication. Over time, your body will likely adjust to the medication and drowsiness will improve. If drowsiness is preventing you from working or performing other daily tasks, you may ask your doctor to reduce the dosage or prescribe another medication that will not have this effect.

Cardiovascular System Side Effects

Flexeril rarely blocks receptors on your heart or blood vessels to cause unwanted side effects., states the Mayo Clinic. However, when used inappropriately or if too much is taken, you may experience a chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat and trouble breathing. You should seek immediate medical attention if you are having these problems. In addition, it may help to lie down and elevate your feet above the level of your heart to improve circulation.

Gastrointestinal System Side Effects

Drugs.com states that Flexeril may cause unwanted effects on your digestive tract. Receptors in your stomach or intestines may be blocked, which can result in altered function. Side effects that you may experience include nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation or gas. You may take an over-the-counter stool softener if you have constipation, or take an over-the counter gas relief medication if you have gas. Do not take medications for diarrhea, but be sure to tell your doctor. Rare, but serious side effects that you should be aware of include dark urine, clay-colored stools and jaundice. This may be a sign of damage to your liver or pancreas. Immediately stop taking Flexeril and call your doctor.
