Positive mental health hinges on a variety of factors, including lifestyle, economic factors, genetics and personal experience. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression and anxiety are among the most common mental illnesses to afflict women in America. Treatment for such illnesses generally involves psychological or complementary therapies and/or medication. In addition, some herbs have been shown to promote women's mental health and help prevent or treat mental illness. But before trying any of them, it's best to consult a doctor.
St. John's Wort
St. John's wort, or hypericum perforatum, is a plant-based herbal supplement known for its effectiveness in treating mild to moderate depression. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), research shows 300mg of St. John's wort daily can help treat mild to moderate depression, as well as antidepressant medications. St. John's wort carries fewer potential side effects than most antidepressants but interacts with numerous prescription medications, including birth control pills. Keep in mind that St. John's wort is not intended as treatment for major depression.
Gingko Biloba
Ginkgo biloba, also known simply as ginkgo, is an herbal supplement reaped from the gingko tree. According to UMMC, 40mg to 80mg ginkgo biloba extract daily may help reduce symptoms of depression. In addition, gingko has been shown beneficial in enhancing a person's memory and supporting women's overall moods. Research is still being conducted regarding the effectiveness of gingko biloba as a tool in promoting mental health and treating or preventing mental illness.
Lemon Balm
Lemon balm comes from the mint family. According to the UMMC, lemon balm is considered a "calming" herb, useful in reducing stress and anxiety, promoting sleep, improving appetite and reducing symptoms of indigestion. Lemon balm can be taken as a dried leaf and is often sold in bulk at health food stores. It can also be found in tea form, capsules, extracts and oils. For women who experience modest anxiety, the oil (essential oil) can be used as aromatherapy by dotting the oil on your wrist or heating oil in an aromatherapy candle fixture. Additional herbs used for enhancing calmness, such as valerian root, chamomile and hops, are often included in lemon balm supplements.
