In most cases, redness on the face is caused by a medical condition known as rosacea. It is a chronic condition that has periods where the redness may be worse. Along with redness, you may notice small pus filled bumps on the surface of the skin. The redness typically starts in the center of the face and then eventually spreads to the forehead and chin. You may need to try several different treatment methods to effectively get rid of the redness.
Step 1
Wear sunscreen. To stop facial inflammation, apply sunscreen with SPF 15 to the face when outdoors. Reapply every two hours when exposed to the sun for prolonged periods. Wide hats and sunglasses can also be used to protect your face from sun exposure.
Step 2
Adjust the type of skin care products you use. You need to avoid irritating products to help get rid of reddened skin. According to the MayoClinic, you should avoid topical products that contain alcohol. The product should also be labeled non-comedogenic. This means that the product has been tested and does not clog the pores of the skin.
Step 3
Receive a prescription for a topical solution to treat the rosacea. Active ingredients include metronidazole, benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin. The topical solution will be applied to the skin on a daily basis to remove redness.
Step 4
Inquire about oral medications to get rid of rosacea. A course of oral antibiotics may be prescribed if redness and inflammation is severe. The prescription medication Accutane can be given as well to rosacea sufferers. Your doctor will closely monitor you while on these medications due to the risk of severe side effects.
Step 5
Conceal the redness while treating rosacea. Makeup companies make powders and creams that have a yellow or green color. These shades help conceal facial redness.
