Chemical peels can have a number of positive, exfoliating effects on your skin. Peels consist of applying an acid, such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid, to your skin. This causes the top layers of skin to separate and peel off. As your old skin sheds, new, younger-looking skin that's smoother and more evenly pigmented forms to replace it.
Improves Skin Discoloration
Superficial and medium-strength chemical peels can fade age spots, freckles, blotchiness and other skin pigmentation irregularities. During a superficial peel, an acid solution applied to the skin removes only a portion of the outer layer of skin (epidermis). You may need to undergo a series of surface peels before you're satisfied with the results. Medium-depth acid peels remove the epidermis and a small portion of the middle layer of skin (dermis). Peels won't make your pores smaller or remove broken blood vessels.
Reduces Acne and Scarring
Chemical peels may help diminish the signs of mild scarring and acne. Peels can remove blackheads and whiteheads and diminish the appearance of small, depressed scars. The drying effects of a peel can be especially beneficial for people with oily skin. The Mayo Clinic says peels work best when used in conjunction with other acne treatments.
Softens Wrinkles
The exfoliating effects of chemical peels can help minimize fine lines, especially those on the forehead, cheeks, around the mouth and under the eyes. The new skin that appears following a peel can refresh the texture of your skin and give it a healthy glow. Some patients undergo a chemical peel a few months after a face-lift or eyelid surgery to further enhance their appearance. Others may choose to improve the effects of a chemical peel with laser rejuvenation, dermal fillers or botulinum (botox) injections. If you decide to proceed with a peel, be advised that it's important to wear sunscreen, because peeling agents can make your skin more vulnerable to sun damage.
