Clomiphene is the generic name of a drug sold in the United States with two brand names, Serophene and Clomid. It is used in the treatment of infertility in women. The National Institutes of Health states clomiphene spurs ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary, to allow it to become fertilized. The Mayo Clinic reports that the drug most likely changes the balance of hormones in women to allow conception, but researchers are not certain how it works. The medicine also is used for other problems, including male infertility.

Pain

Among the few common serious side effects of taking the clomiphene pill are pain in the pelvis or in the stomach. Explain these types of side effects, potentially caused by the medication attempting to balance your hormones, to your physician immediately. They may require medical aid or at least medical advice. Clomiphene also can produce headaches and breast tenderness. These common side effects are not classified as serious and should go away by themselves as you continue to use the medicine.

Blurred Vision

Taking clomiphene also may make it difficult for you to focus your eyes, resulting in blurry vision. The drug also can induce some other problems with your eyes in which you see flashes or spots. While there is some debate about whether these are serious or non-serious side effects, depending upon which medical professional is talking, talk to your doctor about them to make certain no serious problem exists.

Hot Flashes

Hot flashes, also known as flushing, may occur when you take clomiphene. Basically, hot flashes are sudden sensations of warmth that can occur in your face or throughout your body. They can turn your skin red and make you sweat. They typically do not last long, but may happen more than once. They should cease after a few days of taking the drug.

Nausea

The National Institutes of Health reports that clomiphene may cause an upset stomach, queasiness or nausea. This can result in vomiting. These side effects should pass in a few days.
