Toprol XL is the brand name for metoprolol, a prescription medication classified as a beta-blocker. This drug is an extended release form, which allows for easier daily dosing. Toprol XL works by blocking the beta-receptors on the heart, causing the force and rate of the heart beat to decrease. It is used for the treatment of high blood pressure, angina (chronic chest pain) and in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Because many side effects may occur with the administration of Toprol XL, discuss any concerns about adverse events with your health care provider.
Hypotension
Toprol XL may cause low blood pressure, also known as hypotension. According to the "Drug Information Handbook," it may occur in up to 27 percent of individuals. Be cautious when moving from a sitting or lying position to a standing position and climbing up or down stairs when taking Toprol XL. Another common side effect is bradycardia, which means an extremely slow heart beat. About 2 to 16 percent of individuals on Toprol XL may experience bradycardia. If you experience worsening of these side effects or chest pain, seek medical attention right away.
Dizziness
Dizziness is common side effect in patients taking Toprol XL occurring in about 5 percent of users. Be cautious when you are driving or engaging in activities that require alertness until you know how you will react to the drug. Fatigue may occur in up 10 percent of individuals. Headache may also occur and can be treated with a pain reliever, such as acetaminophen. If these side effects become severe, seek medical help.
Diarrhea
Another common side effect of Toprol XL is diarrhea. About 5 percent of users experience this adverse effect. This, in turn, can cause abdominal pain and flatulence seen with this medication. Drinking plenty of fluids and eating small meals throughout the day may help. If the diarrhea becomes severe or persists for more than three days, contact your doctor immediately. Nausea and vomiting may also occur in many individuals. Chewing gum or sucking on hard candy may alleviate these side effects. Inform your physician if these side effects are persistent.
Pruritus and Rash
Pruritus, another word for itchiness, and rash may occur upon initiation therapy with Toprol XL. The "Drug Information Handbook," reports that these undesired side effects may be present in up to 5 percent of individuals. If these side effects worsen --- or if you experience any swelling in the hands or face --- you may be having an allergic reaction and require emergency medical attention.
Depression
Depression may occur in about 5 percent of users of Toprol XL. This adverse effect should diminish as body grows accustomed to the drug. If your depression appears to worsen or if you have thoughts of hurting yourself or others, stop the medication and contact your health care provider right away.
