Dandruff is a common scalp problem that occurs when a fungus develops on the skin in your scalp, creating dry, white flakes of skin to break off from your scalp. These flakes can get caught in your hair and clothing and cause embarrassment at school or in the workplace. Dandruff sometimes results from poor hair cleaning habits, but some people are more susceptible to developing the fungus and have an increased risk of developing dandruff.
Step 1
Purchase a dandruff shampoo to get rid of your dandruff problem. Specialized dandruff shampoos are needed; they use chemicals to slow down the development of your dandruff, and kill the fungus. Normal shampoos, however, will allow the fungus to survive on your scalp. Several types of dandruff shampoos are on the market. Each features particular chemicals that can cure your dandruff over time. Zinc pyrithione dandruff shampoos are the most common type of shampoo. They are antibacterial and antifungal, nurturing your scalp while killing the fungus. When this type of shampoo doesn't work, try tar-based shampoos or ones featuring salicylic acid, selenium sulfide or ketoconazole.
Step 2
Scrub your scalp vigorously with the pads of your fingers for five minutes. You should be actively moving your fingers the entire time.
Step 3
Fully rinse your hair out to make sure the soap gets out of your hair.
Step 4
Visit your dermatologist to see if there is an ointment or prescription shampoo you can get to cure your dandruff. Do this only after multiple types of shampoo have failed you.
