How to Calculate Metabolic Needs

Your metabolic needs include the minimum rate at which you burn calories, which is also known as your resting metabolic rate (RMR.) Your RMR assumes that you don't exercise and that you're in the post-absorptive phase of digestion. This means that you're not actively digesting food. You can calculate your RMR from your height, weight, age and gender. The procedure provides your RMR in units of calories per day.

Step 1

Measure your height in centimeters (cm) with a tape measure. You can also multiply your height in inches by 2.54 to get your height in cm.

Step 2

Weigh yourself in kilograms (kg) with a bathroom scale. You can also divide your weight in pounds by 2.2 to get your weight in kg.

Step 3

Compute the RMR for males. This uses the equation RMR = (height x 6.25) + (weight x 9.99) - (age x 4.92) + 5 where height is in cm, weight is in kg and age is in years.

Assume you're a male who is 177cm tall, weighs 73kg and is 35 years of age. Your RMR is therefore (177 x 6.25) + (73 x 9.99) - (35 x 4.92) + 5 = 1,668 calories per day.

Step 4

Calculate the RMR for females. This uses the equation RMR = (height x 6.25) + (weight x 9.99) - (age x 4.92) -- 161.

Assume you're a female who is 165cm tall, weighs 65kg and is 42 years of age. Your RMR is therefore (165 x 6.25) + (65 x 9.99) - (42 x 4.92) - 161 = 1,313 calories per day.
